With Rome and its environs as our laboratory, we will cut a series of paths through the city, through its layers of material culture and time, and we will unearth its structure. Using drawing and observation as our primary methods of investigation, we will study the great spaces of Rome, uncoupling the image of form from its organizing structure and resulting space. Visits will cover the Roman and the Italian scenario, and will include trips to the Roman surroundings.

A coordinated effort has been made with the UA Rome Center faculty in order to offer you the most organic and comprehensive schedule of visits to important landmarks of Roman urban history, allowing for the necessary site experience that is vital to truly understanding the environment. To further enhance the comprehension of the sites and reinforce the process of analysis of buildings and urban spaces, each visit will be completed with sessions of sketching and drawing. The material produced will be kept in a sketchbook and it will be periodically submitted to the instructor for criticism and evaluation.

Jonathan Coble, Piazza Navona The lectures, the reading assignments and the site visits, in addition to general information necessary for the comprehension of the urban history of Rome, will focus on specific issues which students are encouraged to expand upon and to transform into working material for their work and for their conceptualization. In this graphic representation of a designed or surveyed building, the details play the predominant role. They are composed in different scales in the attempt to single out the dialogue among the parts in the making of the text of the building. Sometimes the building as a whole ispresent in the drawing, and generally it is represented at a minuscule scale, and so it seems a detail among details.
